The former Bulls and Stormers back has had scans on his knee and could miss the start of the Super Rugby season.

It is to early to give a prediction of the severity of the injury and how long it may keep him out of action with the Lions.

Lions coach John Mitchell said that he was disappointed with Des Fountain's injury as he had been enjoying some form on the training grounds and at Newlands on Friday.

"Dylan has a knee injury and while it is pre-season, we will have to assess him." Mitchell told SuperSport.

"It is a pity as he had some good touches in areas that were going to put him in contention for a starting spot."

On the positive side Mitchell said that there were not other injuries after the loss to the Stormers but said they may may cancel their planned game against the Kings in George.

"It seems we may play a weak side down there," Mitchell added, "If that is the case, then we may consider not playing the game.

"There are ways around that and we will then stick to our preparation and simply increase the intensity of our training programme."
