Bulls vs Sharks live

The South African Tremendous Rugby season kicks off at Loftus Versfeld by using a match that's anticipated to generally be a large physical clash concerning the Bulls and Sharks.

The Bulls use a quite diverse look about them though the workforce is reasonably familiar as you will discover nine Bulls Super Rugby debutants but in addition eleven Springboks from the team.

Match scheduled

Date : 24 February 2012

Play time : 17 : 00 Gmt

The Sharks have misplaced a couple of their significant names from last season but you'll find predominantly the gamers that were near the conclusion of their careers such as Stefan Terblanche, Adrian Jacobs and John Smit.

A huge distinction for the Sharks this season is that they've two robust choices at ten as Freddie Michalak remains to be with all the Sharks although this week he is participating in at No.nine.

The personnel losses for that Bulls happen to be much more unpleasant as this calendar year you can find no Victor Matfield, Bakkies Botha, Fourie du Preez, Danie Rossouw plus the list goes on. Very last 12 months truly was the stop of the Bulls era.

The captaincy has gone to Pierre Spies who, if we have been trustworthy, has not been the participant he was due to the fact 2009. Offering Spies the captaincy could do the job out effectively but it also could include too significantly stress on him that he cannot obtain his old video game. Only time will explain to.

Particularly battles to look at out for your duel among Patrick Lambie and Morne Steyn will be pretty exciting especially since previous Bulls mentor Heyneke Meyer is now Springbok coach.

These teams final fulfilled in Pretoria final year as well as Sharks won 23-36 but out of the previous 5 clashes concerning the groups the Bulls have won about three. Three of those five matches were at Loftus and also the Sharks won two with the several.

The Bulls as well as Sharks have played one another in Tremendous Rugby sixteen instances as well as the Bulls have won eight and lost seven.

On normal if the Bulls and Sharks perform one another the Bulls score 19 details along with the Bulls 22. At Loftus the normal score nonetheless favours the Sharks at 19-21.

Rebels rugby live online.

The Melbourne Rebels have announced their squad to face a strong Blues outfit, in both teams' second trial match of the season, at AAMI Park on Saturday.

With eleven current or former All Blacks in the Blues squad that will make the trip to Melbourne, the Rebels will face a formidable opponent in the build-up to their 2012 Super Rugby campaign.

Head coach Damien Hill is under no illusions about the size of the task at hand, but believes playing such quality opposition is the best way to prepare for the gruelling season ahead.

“We’ve got a great test coming up against the Blues given their performances over the last couple of seasons and the quality of the squad they have at their disposal,” said Hill.

“They’re two games out from their first game of their Super Rugby season as well so we expected them to send a very strong team.”

Despite last week’s 36-0 scoreline in the Rebels' first trial game against the Chiefs, Hill hasn’t deviated from the way the team is preparing for the season ahead.

“We haven’t changed the way we’ve trained or prepared too much this week,” said Hill.

“We haven’t gone away from the basics, we're looking to build for the opening round. We have a number of things to test against the Blues, and they’re a quality opposition to test ourselves against.”

Centre Mitch Inman, flyhalf James Hilgendorf and hooker Adam Freier all return to the match day squad after missing last week’s trial game due to injury. Captain Stirling Mortlock will miss the game as he continues to recover from a minor knee injury.

While last week’s game was played over four 20-minute quarters, this week’s game will return to the more customary format of two 40-minute halves. Hill will change his team considerably from one half to the next.

Cheetahs rugby live online.

The Cheetahs managed to surprise the Stormers with a 22-14 victory in their Pre-Season Series clash, thanks mainly to a 14-point contribution from their flyhalf Johan Goosen, at Newlands, on Saturday evening.

Goosen's boot kept the Cheetahs ahead for most of the way and when the Stormers were still trying to chase down a five-point deficit, substitute flyhalf Sias Ebersohn put the issue beyond doubt with a long-range penalty, two minutes ahead of the final whistle.

The Stormers were full of running at the outset and some explosive breaks into the Cheetahs' half held out the promise of an early score.

However, the Stormers' runners needed to pin their ears back and take advantage of the space out wide but instead they relied on support to arrive.

The Cheetahs' defence stood up to the early tests and they kept their lines intact for the rest of the half. Their cause was helped by the Stormers' poor option taking.

The two flyhalves, Demetri Catrakilis (Stormers) and Goosen (Cheetahs) were responsible for all the first-half scoring.

Goosen goaled two penalties and snapped over a drop goal, while Catrakilis was on target with two penalty goals.

In the closing stages of the first half, Catrakilis missed two penalties from the Cheetahs' 10-metre line, and those misses meant that the Stormers were left trailing 9-6 at the halftime break.

The action was fast and furious after the interval and two tries were scored in the opening four minutes of second-half play.

First, Stormers' hooker Deon Fourie forced his way over at the corner flag, and then the Cheetahs' speed merchant Rocco Jansen ran in unchallenged from 30 metres out for his side's first try.

Goosen managed to convert Jansen's try, and that opened up a 16-11 lead for the Cheetahs in the 44th minute.

Catrakilis closed the gap six minutes later with his third penalty but Goosen later restored the five-point lead with a 40-metre penalty.

Lions rugby live online.

The Lions have suffered a blow for their upcoming Super Rugby campaign with the news that centre Dylan des Fountain could be out of action for an extended period.

Des Fountain played for the Lions in Friday's Super Rugby warm up match against the Stormers in Cape Town but injured his knee.

The former Bulls and Stormers back has had scans on his knee and could miss the start of the Super Rugby season.

It is to early to give a prediction of the severity of the injury and how long it may keep him out of action with the Lions.

Lions coach John Mitchell said that he was disappointed with Des Fountain's injury as he had been enjoying some form on the training grounds and at Newlands on Friday.

"Dylan has a knee injury and while it is pre-season, we will have to assess him." Mitchell told SuperSport.

"It is a pity as he had some good touches in areas that were going to put him in contention for a starting spot."

On the positive side Mitchell said that there were not other injuries after the loss to the Stormers but said they may may cancel their planned game against the Kings in George.

"It seems we may play a weak side down there," Mitchell added, "If that is the case, then we may consider not playing the game.

"There are ways around that and we will then stick to our preparation and simply increase the intensity of our training programme."

Hurricanes rugby live online.

For fans and supporters alike, 2011 was a season to forget for the Wellington franchise. Although it wasn't their worst ever placing (they finished 9th overall), it was the manner in which the star-studded squad performed and how the internal turmoil played out in the media and on the various social networks. Coach Mark Hammett has made sweeping changes to his 2012 side, changes that have seen staunch Wellington boys and crowd favourites Ma'a Nonu, Piri Weepu, Andrew Hore (who was Captaining the side) and Hosea Gear move to other New Zealand teams.

It's hard what to make of this years' line-up. So little experience with only four current of former All Blacks in the squad, the challenge for new Captain Conrad Smith will be how he manages the enthusiasm from his young charges, all the while encouraging the likes of Cory Jane and Victor Vito to step up and share the leadership role.

The Hurricanes achilles heel has always been its forward pack and although young and confident, compared to the other units stomping around footy parks, unfortunately it's likely 2012 will be just as challenging. In the backs there's some pretty exciting new talent in the mix. Beauden Barrett will be marshalling the troops from first-five, but big things will be expected from the likes of Jayden Hayward, Julian Savea and TJ Perenara. Strong seasons from both Smith and Jane are almost a given.

As a true-blue Wellingtonian domiciled in Auckland, my heart says er, yes but the head says no. Sorry Hurricanes fans - odds of 25:2 which make them the least favored New Zealand side in 2012. Please prove me wrong.

Stormers rugby live online.

The Stormers showed deadly finishing touches, defeating the Southern Kings 38-13 in a pre-season friendly at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Saturday.

After a tightly contested first half, with the Stormers slightly ahead at 12-10, the Cape side took control.

Number eight Nick Koster and centre Jean de Villiers both dotted down within 15 minutes after the break as the visitors stretched the gap to 24-10.

The Kings were constantly on defence with the Stormers' accurate recycling of the ball keeping their opponents on the back foot.

First Koster burst through when the Kings defence simply ran out of numbers with fullback Joe Pietersen adding the conversion.

Ten minutes later, Pietersen provided the final pass for De Villiers to cross over untouched.

The Kings, by then, had lost Zane Killian to a yellow card as the Stormers forwards worked well together in driving for the line, resulting in referee Lourens van der Merwe heavily penalising the Kings in the mauls.

Scrumhalf Falie Oelschig kicked a fine penalty from near the touchline to narrow the gap, but soon afterwards the Kings made a hash of a lineout.

It resulted in Bryan Habana, playing at inside centre, bursting through a gap to set up Pietersen for a try which the fullback converted to put the Stormers well up at 31-13.

While the hosts had occasional moments when they threatened the Stormers, the Kings were forced to make numerous tackles to keep the visitors at bay.

It again proved too much for the home side when replacement flyhalf Burton Francis crossed for the final try of the match, which Pietersen again converted.

Not surprisingly, the game ended with the Stormers on attack, as they came close to scoring again but Gio Aplon lost the ball as he made a dart for the line after the hooter had gone.

Aplon had dotted down the first try of the match when he outstripped the Kings defence after a kick ahead in the fourth minute.

Queensland Reds enforcer Anthony Faingaa has been cleared to play for the Reds in their second and final Super Rugby trial match of 2012 against the Western Force in Perth.

Faingaa will partner Ben Tapuai in the centres as part of a 24-man playing squad which will be aiming to secure its second straight trial victory following Saturday's 27-20 success over the ACT Brumbies in Cairns.

Captain James Horwill and vice-captain Will Genia have been injected into the starting XV which includes seven capped Wallabies from 2011.

Flyhalf Mike Harris will commence the match wearing the number 10 jersey in a starting backline which also features Digby Ioane and Dom Shipperley on the wings and Luke Morahan at fullback.

Horwill will partner fellow Wallabies lock Rob Simmons while props James Slipper and Ben Daley, and hooker James Hanson, round out the tight-five.

The Reds will field a young backrow with Jake Schatz at number eight combining with Eddie Quirk and Liam Gill at blindside and openside flanker respectively.

"We're not long away from playing New South Wales so it's pleasing to see Ant make an earlier than expected return from injury which will give him some solid match practice before round one," coach Ewen McKenzie said.

"There's no denying his defence is a huge asset but he has an ability to lift those around him with his enthusiasm and with the intensity in which he plays the game.

"Securing a win in our opening trial against the Brumbies was important but it has also given us a number of areas to concentrate on moving forward.

"We've got a strong platform from which to work so it's important the group now takes onboard the feedback we've offered while putting it into practice in pressure game situations against the Force."

Berrick Barnes will lead the Waratahs out for the first time in 2012 as they take on Samoa, in the first of two trial matches against the Pacific Islanders.

In a bid to ensure the whole squad benefit from match action ahead of their big Super Rugby opener against current champions the Queensland Reds later this month, in his first match at the helm Head Coach Michael Foley has selected two full XVs for the encounter, with each side contesting two 30-minute quarters.

With the Waratahs facing current champions and arch rivals the Queensland Reds in the opening round of this year’s Super Rugby competition on 25 February, the Tamworth encounter is an important part of the team’s final preparations and Foley is keen to maximise game time across the squad.

"We’ve chosen this format to try and give most players 60 minutes of rugby to best complement our pre-season training," he said.

"Our mandate is to produce 80 minute players and giving most of the guys 60 minutes of trial match rugby is an important progression towards that goal."
p>Wallaby stand-out Barnes will take charge of the first half, leading a team with five further internationals, plus hotly-tipped Waratahs debutant Sarel Pretorius.

After the half time whistle, Barnes will pass the captain’s armband and No. 10 jersey to experienced Sydney University playmaker, Daniel Halangahu, who will lead a youthful and exciting looking combination including former Australian Sevens player Bernard Foley and highly rated back rower Lopeti Timani.

"Berrick is part of our leadership group and Daniel (Halangahu) is one of our senior professionals. Both are key decision makers for us and suit what we are trying to achieve."

The match will be New South Wales fans’ first opportunity to see new recruit Sarel Pretorius in action for his new side. The highly rated scrumhalf, well known for his tryscoring ability, first caught the Waratahs’ attention at the beginning of last year when assistant coach Scott Bowen spotted his potential in the Cheetahs’ 23-3 Super Rugby victory over the home side.

Hoeata ripped his pectoral muscle last week and had an operation earlier this week which is expected to rule him out for between three and four months.

Highlanders coach Jamie Joseph said that it was a "massive" blow to both the Highlanders and Hoeata.

Hoeata can play at both lock and blindside flanker suffered the injury when he was making a training and ripped the muscle off the bone.

"He was looking very good and mentally very hungry after what he achieved last year and wanted to carry on with that," Joseph told the Otago Daily Times.

The lock was hoping to have a big season in 2012 but is now only likely to get back on the rugby field after four months and will miss the first third of the season.

The twenty-eight-year-old was Joseph's first signing when he took over the Highlanders and played every game last season.

While he didn't make the All Blacks squad for the Rugby World Cup Brad Thorn is heading overseas and Hoeata has been mentioned as a replacement after playing for the All Blacks against Fiji.

Other locks in the squad are Josh Bekhuis and new signing Cullum Retallick, while Nick Crosswell could also cover at lock.

Bekhuis has however not started full training yet as he recovers from an operation to fix a groin injury.

The Sharks made light work of their first pre-Super Rugby season match of the year as they ran in 10 tries to crush Boland 62-0 at Kings Park on Friday night.

Marcell Coetzee and Lubabalo Mtembu both scored a brace late in the game, but before that the hosts had led 21-0 at the break thanks to scores from new signing Riaan Viljoen, Bismarck du Plessis and JP Pietersen, playing at centre.

Siviwe Magaba was shown a straight red card on the stroke of half time, although the visitors were still allowed to field 15 players in the second half.

It mattered little, though, as Sibusiso Sithole, Lwazi Mvovo and Paul Jordaan's efforts added to the four from Coetzee and Mtembu to give the hosts a simple win.

Until now, the Sharks had been hard at work in training and played an internal trials game last week for the first time.

They hardly looked rusty when the game began with the visitors on the back foot from the outset.

Du Plessis and Mvovo both came close in the opening minutes, while Dale Chadwick was denied a try after his burst was deemed held-up by referee Craig Joubert.

When Boland did get some respite, it only lasted seconds as the ball failed to leave their half.

The first points came in the 17th minute when Viljoen collected a quick tap-and-go penalty from Frederic Michalak and burst over from five metres out -- Patrick Lambie comfortably making the conversion.

The Sharks collected a second try in the 23rd minute after Boland put more pressure on themselves in the back with handling errors and a strong passage of phases ended with Du Plessis powering over.

Lambie again converted to double the advantage.

Boland threatened briefly on the half-hour mark, but the Sharks hit back thereafter with Pietersen, who looks set to play more regularly at centre this term, crossing thanks to a brilliant spurt of pace and power from Odwa Ndungane.

The veteran winger played the ball inside to Viljoen on the angle and the new man then picked another inside pass to send Pietersen away under the post.

After Lambie converted again, the men from Paarl were reduced to 14 men when Magaba was shown a straight red card by referee Joubert for a spear tackle on Keegan Daniel.

That came on the stroke of half time and straight after the restart Sithole dived over under the post after reading Chadwick's pass to perfection.

Lambie added the extras and in the 52nd minute Mvovo went in on the left after Michalak's over-the-top pass.

Despite some rusty patches the Bulls impressed in a convincing 39-16 pre-Super Rugby season win over the Cheetahs at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday.

This is the Pretoria outfit's only warm-up fixture ahead of the gruesome Super Rugby season.

For the Cheetahs, their best spell in the game came in the final quarter after both sides' coaches had made major changes.

Though, the Bulls went on to finish off the match with a scintillating try by Zane Kirchner following a backline move marked by pace, good handling and excellent back-up.

With both sides showing new faces, the Pretoria outfit was the happier of the two as their forwards seldom reflected the loss of stalwarts like Victor Matfield, Bakkies Botha, Danie Rossouw and front rowers, Gurthro Steenkamp and Gary Botha.

Behind the pack, Francois Hougaard cleaned quickly and used the possession to good effect, though, there is still much to build on in terms of cohesion.

Conversely, the Cheetahs backs seldom showed their pace, more especially as they struggled for good possession.

The first-half belonged to the Bulls, who could have been further ahead than the 16-9 interval score.

However, the Cheetahs did reflect a well-organised defence that seldom wilted under the Bulls onslaught.

It was at scrum time where the Bulls impressed, with their only first-half try coming from the facet allowing Hougaard to collect and break on the loosehead side.

The Springbok off-loaded to an impressive CJ Stander to round off the 40 metre try.

The Cheetahs flyhalf Johan Goosen provided six of the Cheetahs' nine early points with two 60 metre penalties.

Then both sides opted to make changes in the second-half to give as many players possible valuable game time.

Bulls coach Frans Ludeke replaced tighthead Werner Kruger -- who had a back spasm in the week -- at half-time, with Frik Kirsten coming on at tighthead.

Cheetahs coach Naka Drotske followed suit, most noticeably moving WP Nel to loosehead prop.

Eightman Davon Raubenheimer and flank Ashley Johnson swapped places with Tewis de Bruyn coming on at scrumhalf.

Ten minutes after the major shuffles took place, Goosen scored after a short kick from within his own half, with kind bounce also allowing him in under the posts.

Final Score Bulls 39 Cheetahs 16

Three of the four teams playing on Friday are out of play-off contention, with only the Blues all but guaranteed a place in the top six.

Blues v Highlanders
Eden Park, Auckland

The Blues will have a real battle on their hands at Eden Park, as Pat Lam's troops bid to end a four-game losing streak and cement a play-off spot when they face the Highlanders in Auckland.

It's been a long, slippery slide the Blues will want to get off in a hurry ever since losing their place at the top of the standings. Luckily for them, the worst they can finish is sixth - the cut-off for a place in next week's knock-out stages - if results go their way .

But there is also the chance, albeit a slim one, that the Blues could drop out of the top six if they lose and other results go against them.

They're currently fourth following a dip in results over the last month, with the Blues' most recent defeat coming against the Crusaders in last weekend's battle for top spot in the NZ Conference.

The visiting Highlanders have nothing to lose but pride having played themselves out of play-offs reckoning after three successive losses.

They currently sit eighth with an eight-win, seven-loss record, though a month ago they were right on track for a top six spot and still would be had they not dropped home matches against the Lions and Force.

Brumbies rugby live kick off.

The Brumbies and former Super Rugby captain Stephen Hoiles have parted company after the Brumbies released him from the final year of his contract.

After six years with the Brumbies - including the 2009 and 2010 seasons as Captain - Hoiles and the club came to a rugby-based decision to part ways on Wednesday.

Hoiles has battled an Achilles problem for the last 18 months and only played the opening game of the 2011 season.

Although Hoiles has made significant progress on his recovery, recent tests showed he was not going to be fit for the opening rounds of the 2012 Super Rugby season.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the Brumbies and it was a privilege to play and also Captain a team that has such a strong connection with its community," Hoiles said.

"I want to thank all of the players, coaches, staff, and Brumbies fans and members for all of their support over the past six years.

"Because of my injury this past year has been a difficult one for the club and for me but we have had a good discussion and I feel very comfortable with the decision we have mutually agreed on.

"My rehab is coming along well and it's my intention to return to the playing field in the not too distant future. Where exactly that will be is something that will unravel in the months ahead.

"I wish the Brumbies all the best for the future and I am confident that it will once again be a highly successful club."

The Brumbies coaching staff were complimentary about the way Hoiles handled the matter.

"I have been impressed with the way that Stephen has handled this situation and how he has been able to put the Brumbies first. I commend him for his approach," Head Coach Jake White said.

"Stephen has been an outstanding member of the Brumbies for a long time and it is sad to see him move on.

Crusaders rugby live online.

The last time the Crusaders and Sharks met was the historic Twickenham Super Rugby match in London and the Crusaders won 44-28.

The Crusaders have been through a lot since then but as they did back in March the Crusaders will play this match without captain Richie McCaw.

However Sean Maitland who scored two of the Crusaders five tries in that match will be back this week.

Crusaders rugby

Looking at the stats the Sharks have a pretty appalling record against the Crusaders.

The Crusaders have played the Sharks 15 times and won on 13 occasions for a winning percentage of 86.7%. On average when the Crusaders play the Sharks they score 33 points and the Sharks score 23.

In New Zealand the Crusaders have played the Sharks 9 times and won all nine. The closest the Sharks came to beating the Crusaders in New Zealand was in 2006 when the hosts moved the match to Timaru and the Sharks lost 22-20.

When the Crusaders play the Sharks in New Zealand they score 36 points on average and the Sharks score 22 points.

Making matters worse is the fact that the Crusaders have never lost a home fi nal or semi-final. They have won 16 of their 21 playoff matches for an amazing winning percentage of 76%, with all five their defeats in this stage of the season coming away from home.

These five defeats include three semi-finals in South Africa against the Bulls (2007, 2009 and 2010), as well as two finals - once against the Brumbies in Canberra (2004) and once against the Blues in Auckland (2003).

In addition a South African Super Rugby team has never won a play off match in New Zealand. At the same time, the Sharks will have to win only their second playoff
match away from Durban. Since 1996 they've played in nine playoffs, winning three.

The Sharks have dropped Ryan Kankowski for this match which sounds like a mistake until you see that he has been replaced by Willem Alberts. The team that beat the Bulls last week has largely been retained with Patrick Lambie at fullback, Terblanche at centre and Michalak at ten.

Whilst that combination worked extremely well for the Sharks and they hit form against the Bulls it is was only one match and we don't know if they can play like that again. It was clearly the Sharks best performance of the season.

Since then the Sharks have had to travel 11,000 and an ash cloud had the Sharks worrying if they would get to New Zealand at all. Hardly ideal preparations.

The Crusaders have been able to name Sean Maitland on the wing which gives the Crusaders options on both sides as Zac Guildford has been in excellent form of late.

The Crusaders have also been given a boost as Sonny Bill Williams is back for this clash and one of his best games all season was against the Sharks in London. Aside from Dagg the backline is all first choice players and Kahn Fotuali'i is also named on the bench.

The Bookies have given the Sharks a 14 point start for this match - with an offer of Bet 10 and Get 20 in Bets. The lack of home advantage for the Sharks coupled with the travel factor should work too much in the Crusaders favour. Crusaders to win by 16.

On average when the Blues play the Waratahs they score 28 points and the Waratahs score 26 points. In Auckland and Albany however the Blues on average score 33 points and the Waratahs score 22 points.

The Blues have played the Waratahs 8 times in New Zealand and 7 of those clashes have been played at Eden Park.

In 2002 The Blues took their match against the Waratahs to Albany and won 22-20. All but one of the other 6 clashes between the Blues and the Waratahs have been won by the Blues.

That translates to a 87.5% winning percentage for the Blues in New Zealand.

The Waratahs only victory over the Blues in New Zealand came two years ago in 2009 when the Waratahs won 22-27.

That result was in the middle of a three match losing streak for the Blues who ended the losing streak in the most recent match.

In the last five matches the Waratahs have won three and lost two. In the last ten matches both teams have each won five.

The Waratahs have however been hit hard with injuries for this week's clash as they have lost four players from the starting line up last week. That means that almost a third of their first choice players in the last match cannot play.

Crucially the half back pair of Luke Burgess and Daniel Halangahu have been ruled which means a move from full back to first five for Kurtley Beale.

The Waratahs had one of their best matches all season last week when they brushed a resurgent Brumbies team aside 41-7.

The Waratahs attack was in full swing and the same applied for their defence as they held out the Brumbies for 80 minutes and only allowed the visitors to Sydney to cross the line when the match was won.
